Overview, risk factors, prevention and lifestyle management for common conditions.
Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
Hypertension is sustained elevation of the pressure blood exerts on artery walls. It rarely causes symptoms directly, which is why it's often called a 'silent' condition, but over years it damages the heart, kidneys, eyes and blood vessels if left unmanaged.
GERD (Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease)
GERD occurs when stomach acid regularly flows back into the oesophagus, causing heartburn and, over time, potential irritation of the oesophageal lining. It's distinguished from occasional reflux by its frequency and persistence.
Migraine
Migraine is a neurological condition causing recurrent, often severe headaches, frequently accompanied by nausea, light sensitivity and sometimes visual disturbances called aura. It's driven by changes in brain activity and blood vessels, not simply 'a bad headache'.
Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes develops when the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn't produce enough of it, leading to elevated blood glucose over time. It develops gradually and is strongly, though not exclusively, linked to lifestyle factors.
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is the gradual breakdown of joint cartilage, most common in the knees, hips and hands. Contrary to the old idea of simple 'wear and tear', movement and strengthening are now central to its management rather than something to avoid.
Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)
Eczema is a chronic inflammatory skin condition causing dry, itchy, inflamed patches. It's linked to a weakened skin barrier and often runs alongside other allergic conditions like asthma and hay fever.
IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
IBS is a common disorder of gut-brain interaction causing abdominal pain along with altered bowel habits, without visible structural disease. Symptoms vary widely between individuals and are often manageable through diet and stress-focused approaches.
Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
Obstructive sleep apnoea causes the airway to repeatedly narrow or collapse during sleep, briefly interrupting breathing many times a night. It fragments sleep quality even when the person doesn't fully wake, and is linked to cardiovascular risk if untreated.
Iron Deficiency Anaemia
Iron deficiency anaemia occurs when the body lacks enough iron to make healthy red blood cells, reducing oxygen delivery to tissues. It's one of the most common nutritional deficiencies worldwide, particularly among menstruating women.
